FAQs — MaineDolls UK Maine Coon Cattery

Question 1

What is a Maine Coon's personality like?

Accepted Answer

Maine Coons are often described as 'dog-like' cats. They are highly sociable, playful, and affectionate — they love to be involved in family life and will often follow you from room to room. They are not typically lap cats, but they are very people-oriented and form deep bonds with their families. They are also known for their gentle nature with children and other animals.

Question 2

How big do Maine Coons get?

Accepted Answer

Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds. Males typically weigh between 6–9 kg and females between 4–6 kg. They are slow to mature, reaching full size at around 3–5 years of age. Despite their size, they are graceful, agile cats.

Question 3

Are Maine Coons good with children and other pets?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Maine Coons are renowned for their tolerant, gentle temperament and generally get on very well with children and other cats or dogs. Our kittens are raised alongside children and other animals from birth, which helps them grow into confident, sociable adults.

Question 4

How much grooming do Maine Coons need?

Accepted Answer

Maine Coons have a semi-long, silky coat that is less prone to matting than some other longhaired breeds, but they do require regular grooming — ideally two to three times per week. We recommend starting a grooming routine from kittenhood so they become accustomed to it. We include a care guide with every kitten.

Question 5

Do Maine Coons have any specific health concerns?

Accepted Answer

The main hereditary health conditions associated with the breed are Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). All our breeding cats are tested and results are available on request.

Question 6

How much do your kittens cost?

Accepted Answer

Our kittens are priced from £1,695. This reflects the significant investment in health testing, veterinary care, quality nutrition, and the time dedicated to raising each litter. Every kitten leaves fully vaccinated, microchipped, health checked, spayed/neutered, with TICA registration papers as well as a generous kitten pack.

Question 7

Do you require a deposit?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we require a non-refundable holding fee of £350 to reserve a kitten. This is deducted from the final purchase price. The remaining balance is due on collection day. We accept cash or bank transfer only.

Question 8

At what age do kittens go to their new homes?

Accepted Answer

Our kittens leave for their new homes at 14 weeks of age. This allows time for both vaccinations (given at 9 and 12 weeks), full socialisation, and to recover from their spay or neuter operations before they go. We do not let kittens leave any earlier than this, under any circumstances.

Question 9

Can I visit the kittens before committing?

Accepted Answer

For the health and safety of our unvaccinated kittens, and for the security of our family, we do not allow in-person visits to the cattery. We know this can feel disappointing, but it is a policy we hold firmly. What we do offer is FaceTime or video calls so you can meet your kitten in real time, and once your deposit is paid you will receive weekly photo and video updates as your kitten grows. We are always happy to answer questions and keep you as involved as possible from a distance.

Question 10

Do you sell kittens for breeding?

Accepted Answer

Occasionally we may sell a kitten on breeding terms to an approved, registered cattery. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Question 11

What vaccinations do your kittens receive?

Accepted Answer

Our kittens receive their first vaccination at 9 weeks and their second at 12 weeks, covering Feline Herpesvirus, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (the standard 'cat flu and enteritis' combination). We recommend annual boosters throughout your cat's life.

Question 12

Are your kittens microchipped?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All our kittens are microchipped before leaving us, in line with UK law. The chip is registered in the buyer's name and details are provided in the kitten pack.

Question 13

What food do you feed your cats and kittens?

Accepted Answer

We feed a combination of raw food and a premium dry kibble. We include a supply of the food your kitten is used to in their kitten pack, and recommend maintaining the same diet initially to avoid digestive upset. We are happy to advise on nutrition at any time.

Question 14

Should I keep my Maine Coon indoors?

Accepted Answer

We recommend keeping Maine Coons as indoor cats, or providing a secure outdoor enclosure. Maine Coons are trusting, people-oriented cats that are not well-suited to free-roaming outdoors — they are at greater risk from traffic, theft, and disease. An enriched indoor environment with climbing opportunities and interactive play is ideal.

Question 15

How does the waiting list work?

Accepted Answer

When you join our waiting list, we note your preferences (colour, gender, and any other requirements) and contact you when a suitable kitten from an upcoming litter becomes available. There is no obligation — you are under no pressure to take a kitten if the timing or the kitten isn't right for you.

Question 16

How long is the wait for a kitten?

Accepted Answer

Wait times vary depending on your colour and gender preferences. Popular combinations such as silver tabbies and females tend to have longer waits. We plan litters carefully throughout the year and will always give you as much notice as possible.

Question 17

Is there a fee to join the waiting list?

Accepted Answer

No — joining the waiting list is completely free and carries no obligation. A deposit is only required once you have decided to reserve a specific kitten.
